The email addressees are used to send promotional material to potential customers. The leads that you get will allow you to come up with interest groups that you will send follow up material to.

The email lists work if you offer the potential clients solutions to problems that they may have. This will work to create awareness about your products and services. This is because while customers may have some amount of interest in what you are offering, the concern they have in getting solutions to their problems, their needs and improving their lives is unlimited. The email list gives you access to people who have already revealed interest in the kind of goods and services that you offer. This means that you will be able to direct your advertising activities to a particular grouping of people who require what you have.
